What Needs Editing?

Anything that is written for someone else to read should be edited.

The purpose of editing is to produce a work with both clarity and smooth movement from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph. This allows the writing to flow. When it flows it is easier to read and to understand.

It is very difficult to edit your own writing because you know what the sentence is supposed to say. So, you will tend to read what should be there rather than what is actually there. Even if you read through the new draft, attempting to  imagining you are seeing it for the first time, you will not see all the errors you may wish to correct.

The process of editing involves checking the important elements such as sentence structure and clarity, punctuation and mechanics. A carefully developed story, full of interesting ideas will still cause difficulty for your audience if awkward sentences and errors make the book difficult to read.

Finding the right editor for you is essential.
